How Do I Join The Calhoun Church of Christ?

Interested in joining our congregation - the Calhoun Church of Christ? I'm sure you must have some questions…

"WHY should I join the Calhoun Church of Christ?"

1. To be protected. Shepherd-less sheep are at the mercy of wolves. Christians without protective fellowship in a local church soon fade and wilt in their faith. We all need to be accountable to a loving group of disciples in order to grow spiritually. A local church like ours provides spiritual shepherds (elders) & other resources to help you in your Christian walk.

2. To grow. All disciples need a structured teaching environment in a local church so they can grow in understanding the Bible. That's why we emphasize discipleship training through serious Bible study. We believe this will grow authentic disciples of Jesus

3. To serve. All Christians need a church home where they can use their talents and gifts to help spread the good news about Jesus.
As the Apostle Paul wrote "The eye cannot say to the hand, 'I don't need you!' And the head cannot say to the feet, 'I don't need you!'" (1 Cor. 12:21.) As disciples, we're the 'Body of Christ' serving Jesus together.

So-HOW do I know this church is where God wants me to be?
Maybe our Vision Statement can help...

"WHAT'S the special mission of the Calhoun Church?"

Obviously, each church has the overall mission of winning people to Jesus Christ by preaching the gospel to the world.

But the Lord gives each congregation a distinctive vision - a way to accomplish that mission within its own calling...

1. Here at Calhoun Church, our special vision is to "Win people to Jesus & bring spiritual revival by training & motivating God's people to pray ."
As Jesus said, "My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations." (Mark 11:17.)
As we pray more effectively spiritual revival will grow, which will lead more people to Christ.

2. Also, our vision includes knowing God's word intimately. That's why we devote lots of time to our weekly Bible classes for all ages.

3. Plus-this vision involves caring for the needy around us. That's why we have a monthly Food Bank, where we distribute about 35 tons of food yearly to needy families in Ouachita Parish.
So-our vision embraces the Great Commandments-"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and will all your mind… And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself." (Matt. 22:37-38.)

"WHAT'S expected of me if I join?"

The best way to answer this question is to show you what the earliest Christians did in their congregations (according to Acts 2:42-47):

1. They prayed together, and for each other.
2. They worshiped God together, especially on the first day of the week.
3. They gave their money to help spread the gospel of Christ.
4. They loved each other, often eating their meals together.
5. They studied the word of God together (the 'apostles teachings').
6. They touched the communities around them, so that the gospel of Christ spread.

This certainly isn't all they did, but it's a description of WHY early Christians belonged to local congregations … the mission demanded it!

Notice that they were all expected to 'assemble' - to be part of the group (see Hebrews 10:24-25).
They weren't 'lone wolf Christians' but assembled together regularly to remain spiritually strong and to help spread the gospel of Christ throughout their world.

"WILL the congregation vote on my acceptance?"

No, we accept people based on the fact that they profess to be Christians, have been baptized, and that they wish to serve and assemble with this congregation. If you haven't yet been baptized, we can help with that step of obedience to Jesus.

"WHAT denomination are you affiliated with?"

We're not affiliated with any denomination, but are part of the 'Restoration Movement'.
This movement, about 200 years old, seeks to be just Christians, shaping our churches after the Bible and free from denominational creeds and hierarchies.

"So-WHAT'S the procedure for joining?"

In Scripture, when people accepted the good news about Jesus' death, burial and resurrection to cleanse their sins, placed their faith in Him as the Messiah, and were immersed in water (baptized), then they were added to the "body of Christ" - the church worldwide (Acts 2:37-41.)

But, once accepted into this universal body of Christ, new Christians then joined the local manifestation of Christ's church-a local congregation, as Saul (later called Paul) did in Acts 9:26-28.

Even though one is added to the 'Body of Christ', the 'universal church' - that person still needs to join a local congregation of disciples.

So - after being a guest in our assemblies and reading our material for a while, if you think this might be the church home for you, here's how to join us…

First of all, pray, asking the Lord if this is where He wants you to serve in His Kingdom. If you decide that's His leading, then do the following:

Second, just speak to one of our leaders at an assembly and make us aware of your desire to be a part of this church ...

Then fill out the Membership Information Form you'll find in our foyer.
This merely lets us know that you wish to join, and it gives us ways to get in touch with you-your phone, address, email, etc.

We'll use this information to add you to our membership list so we can keep you informed of our church assemblies & activities.

Also-If you'd like to speak with our minister about membership, email Keith Roberts at

May the Lord bless you as He leads you to the right congregation for you. The Calhoun Church of Christ just might be His place for fulfilling your destiny in Jesus.

"If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him." (James 1:5 NIV)
